About 400 people rallied together in Morrisville, North Carolina today to raise close to $20,000 U.S. dollars to help rebuild elementary schools in the earthquake stricken districts of Nepal. The ‘Run4Nepal’ event, organized by Nepal Center of North Carolina (NCNC), was one of the biggest running events in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) region, said the Event Coordinator Dipendra Lamichhane.
People from all walks of life and of all age groups participated in the 5K run that also saw huge turnout of Nepalese in one of a kind event. “The event was probably one of the most well organized Nepali events in the RTP region”, said Ashish Hada, one of the participants. Live music and dance, Nepali exhibition, food stalls, and face paint were some of the other activities followed the main event.

Addressing the event, Kailash Pokhrel, representative from Embassy of Nepal in the United States emphasized on the need for aid in the rebuilding process and thanked all the participants for joining hands. “Although the runners today crossed the finish line, Nepal is still very far from the finish line and a lot more still needs to be done to help rebuild Nepal”, Steve Rao, Town of Morrisville representative further elaborated on the importance of such fund raising events.
About $70,000 USD has been raised by NCNC through several activities so far to help in the rebuilding process. “NCNC has been already in talks with Educate the Children International about joining hands in the rebuilding process”, Lamichhane described on the optimal use of fund raised through the 5K event. Educate the Children International is a New York based non-profit organization that works with families and communities to provide educational opportunities to the children. Many local organizations and businesses helped sponsor the event.

NCNC President Thakur Karki and Event Coordinator Lamichhane thanked all the sponsors and participants for their support. More than 8,800 people lost their lives, nearly 600,000 homes were destroyed and another 280,000 homes were damaged in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25 and a 7.3 aftershock on May 12 in Nepal.
